In what Year did Rolex created 1601

The Rolex Datejust 1601 was created in 1959 and it remains one of the most iconic and enduring timepieces mankind has ever produced.

A model that has transcended generations while retaining its design and features— its Caliber 1560 movement, automatic date function, Jubilee bracelet, plastic acrylic crystal, and so on.

All of these features contributed to its popularity, especially the automatic date function, a groundbreaking discovery from Rolex at the time.

The Origins of the Rolex Datejust reference 1601

The Rolex Datejust original model was first introduced in 1945, with the reference 4467. It was the world’s first wristwatch with an automatically changing date function.

The Datejust was still developing during these early years. In 1959, the 1601 was introduced to replace its predecessors which had fewer design options.

The Datejust ref. 1601, launched 14 years after the original model, was a key evolution of this design and remains one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex models.

The 1601 reference brought with it a more refined and diverse selection of bezels, dial styles, and materials, which helped solidify the Datejust’s reputation as a versatile and sophisticated watch for both men and women.

The 1601 was in production for several decades, until it was discontinued in the mid-1970s, though it remains a staple in the world of vintage Rolex watches.

Design and Features

The Rolex Datejust 1601 design has held up really nicely over time. It even has the same appearance as the present Datejust. It is also one of the most imitated watch designs.

Below are some of its key designs and features:

1. Case and Size

All Datejust 1601 variants have the same 36-mm oyster casing. In an era when larger timepieces are popular, the 36mm size still feels appropriately proportioned, making it a versatile option for both casual and formal occasions.

The case is made of stainless steel, with many models featuring a two-tone design case (yellow/rose gold), combining steel with 14k or 18k gold.

2. Fluted Bezel

One of the most distinctive features of the 1601 is the fluted bezel, a design that has become synonymous with the Rolex brand.

Rolex always uses gold for the 1601's fluted bezel. The stainless steel variants will feature bezels that are either white or yellow gold.

3. Cyclops Lens

As with other Datejust models, the 1601 features the famous Cyclops lens above the date window. This cyclops magnifying lens enlarges the date by 2.5 times allowing the date to be easily read.

4. Movement

The Datejust 1601 is powered by the Rolex Caliber 1575 movement; however, the variants produced before 1965 were powered by the Rolex Caliber 1565.

The Caliber 1575 has an immediate date-change feature, which allows the date to change to the following day at precisely midnight, as well as improved shock protection for the balance wheel.

Both movements are automatic, accurate, and reliable, with a 42 to 48-hour power reserve.

5. Dial Options

The Datejust 1601 pie pan dial is offered with a wide range of dial colors and markers, including silver, black, white, and blue dials.

It was also available with different marker types, from the classic stick markers to the more ornate Roman numerals.

Most variants feature silver-white and golden sunburst dials, adding an extra layer of complexity and visual appeal under various lighting conditions.

6. Bracelet

The 1601 typically comes with the Jubilee bracelet, which has been associated with the Datejust since its inception.

The Jubilee bracelet, with its distinctive five-piece link design and lug width of approximately 20mm, offers both comfort and style.
